- Apep
- Egyptian snake god, a manifestation of Set, enemy of Ra and lord of the Powers of Darkness. As enemy of the sun gods, he was also the enemy of the dead, who could only return to life through his defeat. He is depicted as a great serpent and would appear to be a pre-dynastic storm god, an assumption which is confirmed by his title of the Roarer. He was said to have been slain by Ra at the foot of the sacred sycamoretree of Nut at Heliopolis. Every morning Apep menaced the rising sun, but by the recitation of a powerful spell devised by Thoth the sun was able to render harmless the efforts of Apep. He is also known as Apophis.
